Back to the shadows: Dreamers fear the worst for DACA repeal

Ibrahim Garcia is a 24-year-old student from Wixom, studying social work and paying his way through Schoolcraft College working at a restaurant.

He’s also a Dreamer: A recipient of the protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.

Last September, President Donald Trump eliminated the program through an executive order. A federal judge this month issued a stay, allowing the program to continue to accept applications.

And on Friday, Jan. 19, Congress was scheduled to vote on a month-long spending bill, which is highly unlikely to include a solution or path to citizenship for DACA recipients. Democratic leaders are saying they won’t vote for a spending bill that doesn’t include those provisions, according to National Public Radio.
