New Employment Eligibility Form (I-9) must be used by May 7, 2013

Attention Employers:

On March, 8 2013, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a new version of the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9). All employers must use Form I-9 for each employee when hired in the United States. Form I-9 is used for verifying the identity and employment authorization of each new employee (both citizen and noncitizen). The grace period during which it is permissible to use either the new or previously acceptable versions of the form is ending. USCIS has set a deadline of May 7, 2013 for all U.S. employers to begin using the new Form I-9 when hiring new employees and for work authorization re-verification. Failure to use the new Form I-9 after May 7 will subject an employer to penalties. To be sure you are using the new Form I-9, look for a revision date of 03/08/13 on the lower left hand corner.

The revised forms are available in English and Spanish online at www.uscis.gov. Spanish version of Form I-9 is available for use in Puerto Rico only. Spanish speaking employers and employees in the 50 states, Washington D.C., and other U.S. territories may use the Spanish version for reference, but must complete the English version of the form.
